The Joy of Spring

Spring seems to have sprung in North Texas. Everywhere you look lawns are filled with large clumps of vibrant green clover. I know clover is not everyone’s favorite lawn item- but I love it. In my minds eye, it’s as if green clouds are stuck to yards all over the place.

There is just something about it that makes you want to put off cutting the grass. Whenever I see an unusually large lump of it I want to take my shoes off and go walking through it. Nothing is as welcoming in spring as the ability to once again head outside barefoot with your toes on fluffy green grass and soft cool mud.

Who could forget about the blossoms! I have redbud trees in my front yard and I really do enjoy it when they are in bloom. Last year, I had my trees trimmed a little late in the year. The guy who did them didn’t think so; however, he was wrong because they never bloomed! I was so disappointed! The one good thing is that this year they seem to be extra bright. I don’t know if it is because I did not get to see them last year of if they have just been saving it all up; whatever the reason, I am really enjoying it.

Of course then there are the birds. Who could forget about them? After I mowed my backyard on Friday a Robin came down and seemed to collecting something from the newly cut grass. I have a very strong ‘itch’ to get a bird bath and feeder; however, I already spend too much money on animals! O well… just part of the season I guess.

Speaking of ‘itching’, has anyone had the garden ‘itch?’ I sure have! The Farmer's Almanac predicts one more ‘cold’ sweep before spring starts so I am desperately waiting before I spend money and have a small plot of dead nothings. Of course that is probably what will happen anyway!

O well… I hope you are enjoying opening your doors, windows, and turning on your ceiling fans. I hope you are enjoying walking through the lawn and garden section at Lowes or Wal-Mart and spending money you probably shouldn’t!

A Child in the 80's

I don’t think I have ever blogged about a ‘movie’ but here goes…

Several weeks ago a friend told me about a Transformers movie that was being made. I ‘Ask’ed, at ask.com, if there was ‘an official website for transformers the movie.’ There was. I can’t tell you how long I spent on the site because I don’t even know myself. I was just completely ecstatic.

As someone who can remember writing ‘1984’ on papers in school, I was literally a child in the 80’s; not a toddler, not a baby, but a child. In fact a classmate of mine from High School, who is now a member of a Grammy winning rock band, Bowling for Soup, recently wrote a song entitled ‘1985.’

I would normally not even afford a group like this a mention, especially since I do not endorse their music in any way; however, this one particular song has become very popular. I find it a little humorous because not only has it become popular with people in my generation- but also with teenagers! It’s just funny that all these ‘kids’ seem to like something they know nothing about.

Anyway… I digress...

I remember my childhood 80’s days. I remember the Transformer toys, the ones that are referred to as G1 (Generation 1) on eBay auctions. I guess that means a tiny bit of time has passed since they were released. O well, it doesn’t matter… I can’t wait to see the movie! Whoever had the idea to make a movie of an 80’s toy had to be none other than an 80’s child themselves.

You see, these days, all kids do is Playstation, X-box, or Nintendo. (And I don’t even know if they do Nintendo anymore!) My brother and I didn’t even own a Nintendo until we were at least 12 or 13, and then it was still the original. (I guess you could call it the G1 Nintendo.)

My mind starts wondering to all of those 80’s toys…

Voltron; G.I. Joe; The Get-a-Long Gang; Gummi Bears; ThunderCats; Wuzzles; Strawberry Short Cake; He-Man; My Little Pony; Rainbow Brite; Silver Hawks; Smurfs; Care Bears; Popples; Mask; Wheeled Warriors; Gobots; The Justice League; Pound Puppies…

I think I might have had too many toys! Did I miss any? I am sure I did. I have included some links to just a few sites I have found that really seem to bring back some memories. Here’s to all you 80’s kids… enjoy!

Dialogue Record Entry #2

Formerly Titled:
"Yes, I still support the war in Iraq."

Most evenings I will watch the webcast of the NBC Nightly News from earlier in the evening. The daily 'cast' is not available until after 10:00 pm central. If you have not watched it- I would advise that you watch Monday's.

There is a segment at the beginning of the program and the ending of the program that is 'live' coverage from Iraq; talking to the brave men and women who are on the ground actually fighting the war instead of sitting in leather chairs in heated and air-conditioned buildings discussing the war. It is worth a watch.

So, in light of the program I just want to re-state one important fact...

I am still in favor of a war that frees enslaved people. I am still in favor of a war that topples a tyrant's regime. I am still in favor of a war that is fought so that individuals may elect officials of their own choosing to government offices. I am still in favor of a war that is fought for the Christian principle of Democracy. I am also most certainly still in favor of a war where brave Americans of all genders, faiths, and shades of skin are bravely dying for the idea of freedom for all.

Dialogue Record Entry #1

It has come to my attention that some of my readers have taken one of my posts as 'doctrine.' While I am overjoyed by the fact that you read me- the situation does beg that my blog contain something that probably should have been stated from the very beginning.

Apparently, I have a number of individuals believing that my black brother from another mother has recently purchased his own personal 'bling bling' - i.e. an Escalade.

This is not true. Those of you who have been asking his mother where his Escalade is need to stop. He does not have one.

So, in the hopes that I do not 'split-the-pit' (like my dear pastor's wife told me I would lol), I issue a formal disclaimer- not an apology (forbid) but a DISCLAIMER nonetheless.
